Special Lecture on Heart Transplant, Feb 11, 2011

 

 

 

IILM Academy of Higher Learning, Jaipur in association with NHRDN Jaipur Chapter and Fortis Escorts Hospital organized a special lecture on “Thoracic Organ Transplant” by world renowned heart-lung transplant surgeon Padamshree Dr. K.M. Cherian.

 

Dr. Ashok Bapna, Director, IILM Academy, Jaipur while welcoming the guest said that expertise in the area of thoracic organ transplant is very limited. Talking about Dr. Cherian, he said that Dr. Cherian has performed 32,000 heart operations till date and is one of the most sought after doctors in the world. He also said that Dr. Cherain is in the process of developing Frontier Mediville and a National Medical Science Park as a hub for research and health care to provide medical benefit to the common masses. Towards the end, he said Dr. Cherian’s motto is that “Health care is an industry but care of sick is not an industry.”

 

Dr. K.M. Cherian, Chairman-International Centre for Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Diseases, Chennai said that heart transplantation is one of the best options available for end stage heart diseases .Despite significant limitations to heart transplantation it is one of the most important areas for medical fraternity. The limitations include drug complications and inadequate control of chronic rejection, selection of correct donor and high cost. He said that the cost of post-operative heart transplant is Rs. 1300 to Rs. 1500 per day which is cheaper than that of lung and kidney transplant. Further he said that compared to the other parts of the world, India has less number of donors mainly due to lack of awareness, poor infrastructure, communication gap etc. In order to improve the situation, we need good infrastructure in terms of transportation, communication and intensive care units for donors, experts and trained paramedical staff. He also shared new trends in Thoracic Organ Transplant like ABO incompitable neonatal heart transplantataion, heart transplantataion in HIV patients etc. He said that heart transplantation cases should be published so that other people also get motivated. Dr. Cherian’s presentation was followed by an interactive session in which he addressed the issues of prolonging the life span of those who had undergone heart-lung transplantation and the concept of holistic therapy using the traditional Indian alternate technologies of Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Sidha, Yoga and Meditation.

She said major     determinants of health are social and for this quality of life is an important concept of social and wellness approach.
